Delosperma 'Wheel of Wonder Salmony Pink'
Origin and Habitat
Delosperma 'Wheel of Wonder Salmony Pink' is a hybrid ice plant developed for its striking and vibrant flowers. This hybrid originates from species native to South Africa (Orange Free Stale. Transvaal), where it grows in rocky, arid landscapes with well-draining, dry soils and plenty of sun exposure. The ‘Wheel of Wonder’ series has been selectively bred for its ability to thrive in diverse climates while providing long-lasting, colorful blooms. It performs well in containers, ground covers, and rock gardens, and has gained popularity due to its drought tolerance and attractive foliage.
Description
Delosperma 'Wheel of Wonder Salmony Pink' is a low-growing, spreading succulent that typically reaches 4–6 inches in height and can spread up to 18–24 inches wide. The plant forms dense mats of fleshy, succulent leaves that are perfect for ground cover. Its showy, daisy-like flowers are a soft salmon pink with bright yellow centers, blooming profusely from late spring through summer. The colorful flowers create a dramatic visual impact, particularly when planted in mass.
Cultivation
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 5–9.
Temperature: Best suited to temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. Tolerates light frost but needs protection from severe cold temperatures below -4°C.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing, forms a dense mat over time.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil, enriched with pumice to prevent waterlogging and to promote healthy root development.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is drought-tolerant once established, so avoid overwatering.
Fertilizing: Fertilize every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a diluted succulent fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter when the plant is dormant.
Light: Prefers full sun for optimal growth and to promote abundant blooming.
Pests and Diseases: Resistant to most pests but may attract aphids. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and fungal diseases.
Propagation
Delosperma 'Wheel of Wonder Salmony Pink' can be propagated through stem cuttings or division. Cuttings should be allowed to callus for 1–2 days before planting in well-draining soil. If dividing the plant, gently separate the sections and replant them. Water lightly until new growth is observed.
