Accepted Scientific Name:
Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia ‘Ripple Leaf Jade’

Origin and Habitat:
Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia is native to the Western Cape of South Africa, where it grows in arid, rocky slopes and coastal scrublands. These regions experience dry summers, mild winters, and well-draining, mineral-rich soils. Plants are exposed to bright sunlight, ocean breezes, and periodic drought. The cultivar ‘Ripple Leaf Jade’ has been selected for its distinctive undulating foliage. Like its native habitat, it thrives in dry conditions with excellent drainage and minimal humidity.

Description:
Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia ‘Ripple Leaf Jade’ is a branching succulent shrub reaching 24–48 inches tall and 24–36 inches wide. It features thick, rounded leaves with pronounced wavy (undulating) margins, giving a rippled appearance. The foliage is silvery-blue to gray-green with a powdery coating and may develop reddish edges in strong light. Stems become woody with age, forming a small tree-like structure. In late winter to early spring, mature plants may produce clusters of small, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers, adding seasonal interest.

Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9 to 11.
Temperature: Prefers 10°C to 30°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate, forming a shrub over time.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil; amend with pumice to ensure proper aeration and prevent root rot.
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Thrives in full sun to bright indirect light; strong light enhances leaf color and compact growth.
Pests and Diseases: May be susceptible to mealybugs and scale. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Propagation:
Easily propagated from stem or leaf cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous before planting in well-draining, pumice-rich soil.
