Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum myriostigma var. strongylogonum
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum myriostigma is native to the arid regions of northeastern and central Mexico, where it grows in rocky, limestone-rich soils under intense sunlight and minimal rainfall. The var. strongylogonum form is a cultivated variant noted for its more rounded rib structure. In habitat, plants endure high heat, seasonal drought, and strong sun exposure, often growing partially embedded in mineral soils for protection.
Description:
A slow-growing, spineless cactus forming rounded, star-shaped bodies typically 3–6 inches in diameter and 4–8 inches tall. The var. strongylogonum is characterized by smoother, more rounded ribs compared to typical forms, often with fine white flecking across the green surface. Mature plants produce soft yellow, daisy-like flowers from the crown, sometimes with a subtle orange throat.
