Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum myriostigma var. Onzuka
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum myriostigma is native to the arid, limestone-rich regions of northeastern and central Mexico, where it grows in well-drained mineral soils under intense sunlight and low rainfall. The var. Onzuka is a highly selected Japanese cultivar known for its dense, uniform white flecking. In habitat, plants endure high heat, drought, and strong light, often growing partially embedded in rocky soils.
Description:
A slow-growing, spineless cactus forming symmetrical, star-shaped bodies typically 3–6 inches in diameter and 4–8 inches tall. The var. Onzuka is prized for its heavy, evenly distributed white flecking that can nearly cover the green epidermis, giving a striking, frosted appearance. Mature plants produce soft yellow, daisy-like flowers from the crown, sometimes with a subtle orange throat.
