Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum myriostigma var. kikko
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum myriostigma is native to the high desert regions of northeastern and central Mexico, where it grows in rocky, limestone-rich soils under intense sun and low rainfall. The var. kikko form is a cultivated mutation distinguished by pronounced angular rib protrusions. In habitat, plants endure extreme temperature fluctuations, seasonal drought, and strong light exposure, often growing partially embedded in mineral soils for protection.
Description:
A slow-growing, spineless cactus forming geometric, star-shaped bodies typically 3–6 inches in diameter and 4–8 inches tall. The var. kikko displays distinctive knobby, angular rib formations with a sculptural appearance, often accented by fine white flecking across the green surface. Mature plants produce soft yellow, daisy-like flowers from the crown, sometimes with a faint orange throat, blooming in warm seasons.
