Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum myriostigma var. fukuryu
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum myriostigma is native to arid regions of northeastern and central Mexico, growing in rocky, limestone-rich soils under intense sunlight and minimal rainfall. The var. fukuryu form is a cultivated mutation characterized by irregular secondary rib growths. In habitat, plants experience extreme heat, seasonal drought, and strong light, often growing partially sunken into mineral soils for protection.
Description:
A slow-growing, spineless cactus forming upright, star-shaped bodies typically 3–6 inches in diameter and 5–10 inches tall. The var. fukuryu is noted for its unusual ribbing, with smaller secondary ribs emerging between main ribs, creating a layered, sculptural form often dusted with fine white flecking. Mature plants produce soft yellow, daisy-like flowers from the crown, occasionally with a faint orange throat.
