Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum asterias ‘Kabuto’ hybrid
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum asterias originates from arid regions of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas, where it grows in limestone-rich, well-drained soils under intense sun and seasonal rainfall. The ‘Kabuto’ hybrid is a cultivated selection prized for its dense white flecking and ornamental patterns. In habitat, plants experience hot summers, mild winters, and periodic drought, often growing partially sunken into the soil for protection.
Description:
A small, spineless cactus forming flattened, star-shaped bodies typically 2–4 inches in diameter and up to 1.5–2 inches tall. The ‘Kabuto’ hybrid displays distinctive white speckling or patches across the green epidermis, creating striking geometric patterns. Plants produce large, silky yellow flowers with orange-red centers, emerging from the crown in warmer months, often nearly as wide as the plant itself.
