Accepted Scientific Name: Aeonium ‘Zues’ Middle Spot

Origin and Habitat:
Aeonium ‘Zues’ Middle Spot is a cultivated hybrid believed to have originated from the Canary Islands region, where the genus Aeonium is native. These islands provide a mild Mediterranean climate with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The plant thrives in rocky coastal slopes and volcanic soils with excellent drainage. Its natural environment experiences occasional mists and low humidity, promoting compact, symmetrical rosette growth.

Description:
Aeonium ‘Zues’ Middle Spot forms a striking rosette up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) across, composed of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves that are green to olive with a distinctive darker central mark or “middle spot.” The rosette grows on short stems that may branch over time, forming a small clump. During its flowering season, it produces tall, conical clusters of star-shaped yellow flowers that rise above the rosettes, typically in late spring to early summer.

Cultivation:
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: Prefers mild temperatures between 10–25°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate; faster in spring and fall when temperatures are mild.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix with pumice, perlite, and loam for aeration and stability.
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing soil to dry between waterings; keep nearly dry in dormancy.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced succulent fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or morning sun; avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
Pests and Diseases: May be affected by aphids, mealybugs, and root rot if overwatered. Maintain good airflow and avoid excess moisture.

Propagation:
Easily propagated from stem cuttings or offsets removed in spring or early summer. Allow cut ends to callus for several days before planting in a well-draining medium.
