Polaskia chichipe
Origin and Habitat:
Polaskia chichipe is native to central and southern Mexico, particularly in the dry tropical regions of Oaxaca and Puebla. It grows on rocky slopes and in dry scrublands at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters. These areas are characterized by high temperatures, intense sunlight, and minimal rainfall, which have shaped its adaptability to arid conditions.
Description:
Polaskia chichipe is a columnar cactus that can reach heights of 8-16 feet, with individual stems measuring 4-6 inches in diameter. The light green stems have 8-12 prominent ribs adorned with clusters of small, grayish spines. The cactus produces pale yellow to white flowers, which are small, tubular, and bloom in the evening. The plant also bears small, spherical, red fruits that are sweet and edible, often called “chichipe.”
