Accepted Scientific Name:

Oxalis adenophylla

Origin and Habitat:

Oxalis adenophylla is native to South America, particularly the Andean regions of Argentina and Chile. It thrives in rocky slopes, high-altitude meadows, and well-drained soils, where it experiences cold winters and dry summers. This species is well adapted to harsh conditions, forming dense clumps in its native habitat. It is highly valued in alpine and rock gardens due to its ability to withstand cold temperatures and its striking foliage and flowers.

Description:

This low-growing perennial forms dense clumps, reaching about 4 inches (10 cm) in height and 6 inches (15 cm) in spread. Its delicate, silver-green, deeply lobed leaves resemble a fan shape, adding texture to any garden. In spring and early summer, it produces showy, cup-shaped flowers that are soft lavender-pink with darker purple veins, creating a striking contrast against its foliage. The flowers open fully in bright sunlight and close at night or in overcast conditions.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 5-9.
Temperature: Tolerates -20°C to 25°C; highly frost-hardy.
Growth Rate: Moderate; spreads through bulb offsets.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil with pumice to prevent rot.
Watering: Requires moderate watering; allow soil to dry between waterings.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light encourages abundant flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but can occasionally be affected by aphids and fungal diseases in overly wet conditions.

Propagation:

Propagates easily by dividing bulb offsets in late summer or early autumn.
