Accepted Scientific Name:

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii is native to central and northern Mexico, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. It thrives in rocky outcrops, well-draining soils, and dry scrublands at elevations between 1,500 and 2,300 meters. This species has adapted to harsh environmental conditions, relying on seasonal rainfall and storing moisture in its thick, succulent tissues. It often grows among rocks or in crevices to protect itself from excessive heat and herbivory.

Description:

Mammillaria muehlenpfordtii is a cylindrical cactus that can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. The plant forms clusters over time, creating dense mounds. Its body is covered with numerous tubercles, each bearing a radial arrangement of white spines with longer, darker central spines. In late spring to summer, it produces bright pink to reddish-purple flowers that form a circular crown near the top of the plant.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers 10°C to 35°C but can tolerate brief periods as low as 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate; develops clustering growth over time.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Use a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; adequate light promotes flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, and fungal infections due to overwatering.
