Accepted Scientific Name:

Jovibarba heuffelii 'Bermuda'

Origin and Habitat:

Jovibarba heuffelii is native to the mountainous regions of Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in the Carpathians and Balkans. It thrives in rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and well-draining soils where it endures harsh winters and dry summers. This hardy succulent is well adapted to extreme temperature fluctuations, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens and cold-hardy succulent collections. The 'Bermuda' cultivar is a selected variety known for its unique coloration and compact, clustered growth habit.

Description:

This compact, clump-forming succulent reaches about 3 to 5 inches (7-12 cm) in diameter. It forms dense rosettes with thick, pointed leaves that display a stunning blend of green, purple, and reddish tones, intensifying in cooler temperatures. The plant produces small, pale yellow to greenish-yellow flowers on short stalks in summer, adding a delicate contrast to its bold foliage. Unlike other Jovibarba species, it propagates through tightly attached offsets rather than spreading stolons.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 4-9.
Temperature: Tolerates -30°C to 30°C; extremely frost-hardy.
Growth Rate: Moderate; forms dense clumps over time.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Drought-tolerant; water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth in spring and summer.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; stronger coloration develops in bright light.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may attract aphids or mealybugs; susceptible to rot in overly wet conditions.

Propagation:

Divides through offsets that must be manually separated and replanted.
