Accepted Scientific Name: Erioscyce meinrichiana
Origin and Habitat:
Natively found in the arid regions of northern Chile, Erioscyce meinrichiana thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 500 to 2,000 meters. It is commonly found growing among desert shrubs and on steep slopes where water drains quickly. The natural habitat experiences extreme temperature fluctuations, strong sunlight, and infrequent rainfall, requiring the plant to store moisture efficiently. The species is well-adapted to drought conditions, developing deep root systems and dense spination to minimize water loss and provide protection against harsh environmental factors.
Description:
A small to medium-sized, globular cactus, Erioscyce meinrichiana grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall and 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. Its dark green to bluish stem is covered in prominent, rigid spines that vary in color from white to black. The plant produces large, funnel-shaped flowers in spring, typically ranging from bright yellow to pale cream, with contrasting darker centers. These blooms emerge from woolly areoles near the apex, adding a striking visual contrast to the spiny body. Over time, this species may form small clumps, creating an attractive display in xerophytic collections.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 10-35°C; can tolerate brief drops to 0°C if kept dry.
Growth Rate: Slow-growing but long-lived.
Soil: Requires a well-draining substrate with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between watering. Reduce significantly in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light enhances spine coloration and flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; ensure good air circulation.
Germination Info:
Temperature: 27°C
