Accepted Scientific Name: Echinocereus albispinus

Origin and Habitat:

Echinocereus albispinus is native to the arid regions of northern Mexico, particularly in Chihuahua and Coahuila, where it thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. This species is typically found in limestone-rich desert terrain, often growing in crevices and along dry slopes. The environment is characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations, intense sunlight, and sporadic rainfall. The plant has adapted to these conditions by developing a water-storing stem and dense white spines that provide protection from harsh sun exposure and herbivores.

Description:

A small, cylindrical cactus, Echinocereus albispinus grows up to 10 inches (25 cm) tall and 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter. It is distinct for its dense covering of white spines, which give it a striking frosted appearance. The spines are thin and closely arranged, offering a unique contrast to the green body. In spring, this species produces large, funnel-shaped flowers that range from pink to magenta, often with a lighter center. The blooms create a vivid display against the spiny exterior, making it a visually appealing addition to any cactus collection.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 10-35°C; tolerates brief dips to 0°C if kept dry.

Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between watering. Reduce significantly in winter.
Fertilizing: Feed with diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun; bright light enhances spine density and flowering.
