Echeveria 'Red Sky'
Origin and Habitat
Echeveria 'Red Sky' is a hybrid cultivar derived from the Echeveria genus, which originates in Mexico and Central America. These succulents thrive in arid, rocky terrains with bright sunlight and minimal rainfall. 'Red Sky' is specifically bred for ornamental purposes, known for its striking red hues and compact growth. It is widely cultivated in gardens and indoor collections across temperate and subtropical regions, where it adapts well to container gardening and decorative landscapes.
Description
Echeveria 'Red Sky' grows as a compact rosette, reaching 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Its fleshy leaves are bright red with subtle green tones, and the red intensifies with bright sunlight or mild stress. In late spring or summer, it produces tall flower stalks adorned with bell-shaped coral to pink blooms, which attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.
Cultivation
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 10–11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures above 4°C and is not frost-tolerant.
Growth Rate: Moderate, forming clusters of rosettes over time.
Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding grit or pumice improves drainage.
Watering: Use the soak-and-dry method, ensuring the soil dries completely between waterings. Water sparingly in winter.
Fertilizing: Feed with diluted succulent fertilizer once every 2-3 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.
Light: Grows best in full sun to bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight enhances the red coloration of the leaves and keeps plant compact.
Pests and Diseases: Prone to mealybugs, aphids, and root rot if overwatered. Regularly inspect for pests and maintain proper watering habits to prevent issues.
Propagation
Propagate Echeveria 'Red Sky' through leaf cuttings, offsets, or stem cuttings.
