Accepted Scientific Name: Coleocephalocereus goebelianus
Origin and Habitat:
Coleocephalocereus goebelianus is native to the arid, rocky slopes of southeastern Brazil, where it thrives in well-draining, mineral-rich soils. Found at moderate elevations, this species experiences seasonal rainfall and prolonged dry periods. The habitat is characterized by intense sunlight, high humidity, and temperature fluctuations. Its adaptation to harsh conditions includes deep root systems and dense spination that protect against moisture loss and excessive heat.
Description:
This striking columnar cactus reaches heights of up to 24 inches (60 cm) with a diameter of around 3 inches (8 cm). The erect, slender stems are covered in sharp, golden-yellow to brown spines, arranged in prominent ribs. A defining feature of Coleocephalocereus goebelianus is its cephalium, a dense woolly structure with reddish bristles that develops as the plant matures. Nocturnal flowers emerge from the cephalium, typically white to pale pink, and are pollinated by night-flying insects. Mature plants may produce small, fleshy fruits that attract local wildlife.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15-35°C; tolerates brief drops to 5°C if kept dry.
Growth Rate: Slow-growing but long-lived.
Soil: Requires a well-draining substrate with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between watering. Reduce significantly in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light encourages cephalium development.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; ensure good air circulation.
Germination Info:
Temperature: 27°C
