Echinocereus

The genus Echinocereus comprises approximately 70 species of small to medium-sized, ribbed cacti known for their spiny stems and vibrant, funnel-shaped flowers. Native to North and Central America, these hardy species thrive in arid and semi-arid environments, displaying remarkable drought resistance. Many Echinocereus species are also cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures well below freezing, making them suitable for temperate climates with dry winters. These slow-growing cacti often form clumps and feature dense spination that serves as protection against herbivores and extreme sun exposure. Their striking flowers, ranging from pink and red to yellow and purple, bloom in spring and summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Well-suited to xeriscaping and rock gardens, Echinocereus species require well-draining soils and full sun to flourish.
