Astrophytum ornatum is native to central and northeastern Mexico, primarily found in Hidalgo and Querétaro. It thrives in rocky slopes and arid environments with well-draining soil. This species is well adapted to harsh conditions, storing water in its thick, ribbed body to survive drought. It prefers high elevations where it receives bright sunlight and occasional rainfall.
Description:
Astrophytum ornatum is a striking, slow-growing cactus that can reach up to 39 inches (100 cm) in height and 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter. It features a columnar, deeply ribbed body covered in white flecks, giving it a distinctive, star-like appearance. The sharp, golden-brown spines emerge along the ribs, adding to its ornamental appeal. In summer, mature specimens produce large, yellow, funnel-shaped flowers with a golden center, enhancing their visual beauty.
