Accepted Scientific Name:

Astrophytum coahuilense x Astrophytum asterias 'Super Kabuto'

Origin and Habitat:

This hybrid is a cross between Astrophytum coahuilense, native to Coahuila, Mexico, and Astrophytum asterias 'Super Kabuto', a highly ornamental cultivated variety. In their natural habitats, these species thrive in arid, rocky terrains with minimal rainfall and intense sunlight. They have adapted to store water efficiently and rely on well-draining soils to prevent root rot.

Description:

This hybrid produces a small, rounded cactus that reaches up to 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter. It features a flattened, dome-like shape with smooth, ribbed sections adorned with intricate white speckling inherited from Super Kabuto. The absence of spines enhances its unique, almost sculptural appearance. In late spring to summer, it produces large, bright yellow flowers with an orange center, adding a striking contrast to its textured body.
