Accepted Scientific Name:
Astrophytum asterias f. multipunctatum
Origin and Habitat:
Astrophytum asterias is native to northeastern Mexico and southern Texas, where it thrives in arid, rocky environments with well-draining soils. The multipunctatum form is a naturally occurring variation distinguished by its increased density of white speckles, which offer additional camouflage against its surroundings. It has adapted to intense sun exposure and minimal rainfall, making it a highly drought-resistant species.
Description:
This compact, spineless cactus forms a flat, rounded body reaching up to 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter. Its deep green skin is densely covered with small white dots, giving it a distinct, highly decorative appearance. The shallow ribs and symmetrical structure enhance its aesthetic appeal. In late spring to summer, it produces large, yellow, daisy-like flowers with an orange center, adding a striking contrast to its speckled body.
