These cacti are true survival experts. Some calling the coast of the Atacama desert, one of the driest places on earth home. This desert is so dry that some areas have never recorder rain fall. If it wasn’t for daily fog from the nearby ocean life would be impossible. Many species of Copiapoa have developed strategies to help with survival in their hash environment. Some are covered with a fine powder giving them a blue grey coloration which is very striking. Others have large tubers and almost bury themselves in the soil to reduce moisture loss. Many of these traits are so successful that they create large clumps with hundreds of heads each.
Given Copiapoas ability to with stand such a harsh environment they are somewhat intolerant of wet soil and cold temps. But if these are avoided they can be a very trouble free specimen that will be come true spectacular with age.
